Working Group 2: DECIDE
Business Case for Adaptation

The Adaptation Exchange is the door opener for corporate climate adaptation, helping companies move from recognising climate risk to acting on it. Once a company has assessed where it stands, the Business Case is the forward-looking framework for deciding where to act next. It turns resilience priorities into an investment and governance case that decision-makers can prioritise and commit to.
The tool puts a value on adaptation in a cashflow logic a finance function actually uses. It translates a company's exposure into the cost and return of acting over time, so that adaptation can be weighed as an investment. The Business Case is built for the whole leadership involved in the decision, from the risk and enterprise risk functions who build the case to the CFO who validates it. The aim is to make the topic tangible, to trigger the thought process, to lower the threshold to engage and to open the conversation.
The tool draws on an evolving evidence base. It gives a company a sound starting point for resilience investment decisions rather than a final valuation, and it does not replace its own investment process. Outcomes are not guaranteed. They depend on the quality of the inputs, the specifics of the investment, and factors outside the model, so the results are best read as illustrative guidance and not as an assurance of outcomes without further due diligence by the company.
